Bible Sensory Stories

Bringing Scripture to life through sight, sound, touch and movement — so that every child, whatever their ability, can belong and encounter God's love.

Fridays in Tirana & Durrës

What it is

A Bible story you can touch, smell, hear and feel

Many of the children we work with learn very differently. For a child with a profound disability, words on a page or a story simply told aloud can pass them by. A sensory story is different. Each line of Scripture is paired with something real to experience — grass to hold, bread to break, water to feel, petals released into the air — so the story is met not only with the ears but with the whole body.

It is one of the ways Tek Ura lives out its belief that everyone belongs. Around the same circle sit children with and without disabilities, church families and therapists, all sharing the same story together. No one is an extra. Everyone brings something.

“The success of our Bible Sensory Stories project has shown just how powerful multi-sensory learning can be in helping children connect with Scripture — through sight, sound, touch and movement.”
— Tek Ura team, Bible Sensory Stories

How it works

Every Friday, in both cities

1

Two groups, two centres

Sessions run every Friday with two groups in each of our centres in Tirana and Durrës — a consistent, weekly rhythm children can rely on.

2

Led together

The groups are led by our church leaders alongside our therapists — pairing spiritual care with real clinical understanding of each child's sensory needs.

3

Story, then response

A story is told slowly and repeated, each line met with a sensory experience. Children touch, smell, listen and move — then respond, often creating something together.

A real example

Feeding of the 5,000

One of our recent stories, from Matthew 14. Here are a few of its moments — the words of the story, and what the room does as each line is told.

“The people sat down together on the grassy hillside.”
Touch & smellBowls of grass, herbs and leaves are passed round to hold and smell.
“A child brought five loaves of bread and two fish to Jesus.”
HoldA basket of bread is passed around for everyone to touch and hold.
“Jesus thanked God for the food.”
See & moveEveryone raises their hands and says together, “Thank you, God!” — then a pinch of flower petals is released into the air.
“Everyone ate until they were full.”
FeelEach child receives a small piece of bread; then all stretch wide, breathe in, and let out one big, satisfied sigh together.
“What started as one small lunch became a blessing for thousands.”
CreateEach person adds a paper fish or loaf — carrying a blessing — to one giant community artwork.

Every story is prepared in both English and Albanian, with resources gathered for each sensory moment. Stories are drawn from across Scripture — the miracles of Jesus, the Christmas story, Easter, and more.

Why it matters

Groundbreaking work with some of the most marginalised

In Albania, children with significant disabilities are too often kept out of sight — excluded from school, from church, and from the ordinary life of their community. Bible Sensory Stories says the opposite: that these children are made in God's image, that they can know his love, and that they have a place at the table.

Our therapists bring genuine sensory expertise; our church leaders bring the story of Jesus. Together they have built something rare — accessible, tender discipleship for children the world overlooks. It grew from a small pilot into a weekly project across both cities, and we are still discovering new ways to bring the Bible to life.
